It was the sevens' event that at least ten people had been talking about – the rucked.com sponsored Sons of Serevi 7s at Llandaff North RFC in Cardiff…
Not even torrential rain was able to dampen the sense of occasion in Cardiff last weekend as sides from across England and Wales decided the Middlesex 7s wasn't really all that and opted instead for Hailey Park.
Co-hosted by the Sons of Serevi and Llandaff North RFC, the newcomer to the sevens' circuit set out its stall as firmly being in the 'social' sevens market. With beer foisted upon every player post-match, any refreshment claiming to be anything other than intoxicating was banned from the venue.
The rugby itself wasn't too shabby with the Sons of Serevi, Regan's Rejects, Porky's Pigs joined by, among others, Llandaff North, Western Dolphins and KS Crusaders and Stoma. It was the invitational outfits KS Crusaders and Porky's Pigs that won topped their respective groups, although while the former saw off Regan's Rejects to reach the final, the latter fell to Western Dolphins.
Of course it was the plate competition that everyone was was really into and Llandaff North and Sons of Serevi set the tone by getting involved in a 14-man driving maul barely one minute into their semi-final. Sadly, for the Sons, the gnarly forwards of their fellow co-hosts won out and it was they who went through to final against Stoma.
Not that it matters who won not least because the tournament director was already in the bar and therefore didn't record the results but Stoma manage to stave off the challenge of Llandaff North to capture the glorious plate by a handful of points. And in the cup competition, it was KS Crusaders recorded an impressive win against a Wersern Dolphins' side that refused to give in.
Luckily for those of you who weren't able to attend or play at the birth of a sporting event which will surely, one day, rival the Olympics, there's going to be another one next year and it will also feature a women's event. It's going to be roughly the same date - about August 15th...
